Montrel upgrades Repsol’s loading system at La Pampilla

Repsol refinery modernization is underway at La Pampilla refinery in Lima, Peru, with Montrel leading the upgrade of the automatic fuel loading and unloading system. The project improves loading times and increases safety through the installation of advanced permissives.

La Pampilla is one of the largest refineries in Latin America. It has ten loading bays that dispatch 350 trucks daily with a wide range of liquid fuels, from commercial gasoline to special additives like mining diesel.

Nearly 30 years ago, this refinery became the first in the region to use an automated fuel loading system, developed by Montrel. Due to Repsol’s growth and commitment to advanced technology and safety, upgrading both equipment and software was essential.

The modernization project focused on three main areas. First, hardware upgrades in all ten loading bays, including touch terminals and new safety systems that meet Repsol Peru’s strict standards. Second, a renewal of the administrative system with a multi-user web environment to enhance operational efficiency. Third, the adoption of a Purdue model-based architecture, separating IT and OT layers to ensure secure communication between SAP and the loading system, in line with cybersecurity standards.

The system upgrade has significantly reduced truck dwell times, allowing higher daily throughput and better service quality at La Pampilla. In line with Repsol’s focus on safety, new permissives have been installed to ensure controlled and secure operations.

“Repsol is a key client for Montrel,” says Andrés Gutiérrez-Meca, LATAM Business Development Manager. “We have collaborated for more than 30 years on projects in Spain and across Latin America, including Peru and Mexico.”

This project consolidates us as their strategic partner.
