Overview of LNG Quintero Terminal
LNG Quintero terminal is located in the bay of the same name, in the fifth region of central Chile. It is the main source of natural gas supply for the central area. The terminal features a 1,878-meter-long dock for unloading methane vessels of up to 180,000 m³ of LNG. It also includes a storage area with cryogenic tanks holding 310,000 m³ of LNG.
Additionally, the terminal has a regasification area consisting of two seawater sprays (ORV), capable of re-gasifying 10 million m³ of natural gas per day. A third backup combustion vaporizer (SCV) can vaporize 5 million m³ per day. The facility also has a yard to load tank trucks, initially with two loading bays, plus two newly installed loading points.
Montrel’s Initial Implementation
In May 2011, Montrel installed and implemented the LNG tank truck loading yard, operating at -160 ºC. This was the first liquefied natural gas loading plant in Latin America. Since then, Montrel’s proven experience in LNG cargo systems for over 15 years has helped consolidate LNG as a key fuel in Chile’s current and future energy matrix.
Milestones and Expansion
By July 2013, LNG Quintero terminal had successfully loaded 10,000 trucks thanks to Montrel’s system design and installation. In May 2014, Montrel expanded the truck loading capacity, doubling it to four loading bays.
Thanks to Montrel’s extensive experience in the energy and oil & gas sector, this expansion was implemented without disrupting normal terminal operations. As a result, LNG supply to customers remained uninterrupted while the yard was upgraded.
