Electrical Engineering for a Green Hydrogen Project at Enagás’ Regasification Plant in Palos de la Frontera (Huelva)

Green hydrogen is experiencing significant growth, driven by factors linked to the energy transition, sustainability, and the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Scale Green Energy, an Enagás subsidiary pioneering in the deployment of clean technologies, has developed a cutting-edge project for the competitive production and use of certified green hydrogen, guaranteeing its renewable origin. The facility is located at Enagás’ regasification plant in Palos de la Frontera (Huelva).

OBJETIVE

The Effi Solar Green H₂ Portuario project aims to reduce the terminal’s carbon footprint by replacing natural gas with hydrogen in specific processes.
It includes a modular electrolyzer system made up of seven interconnected cabins.

A 1 MW photovoltaic solar plant was also built. The electricity required to produce green hydrogen must come from renewable sources — mainly solar and wind — both abundant in Andalusia.

The produced hydrogen is stored in a low-pressure tank and then transported by pipeline to the LNG plant.

OUR WORK

Scale Green Energy awarded Montrel the electrical installation works, strengthening our expertise in this field.

Additionally, the Montrel team was responsible for the hydrogen and water process piping, the power line installation feeding the electrolyzer, as well as the mechanical and electrical interconnection of all cabins comprising the electrolyzer.

ADD VALUE

Green hydrogen is produced through water electrolysis, a process in which electricity is used to split water (H₂O) into oxygen (O₂) and hydrogen (H₂). What makes this process innovative and sustainable is that the electricity comes from renewable sources—in this case, photovoltaic solar energy. As a result, green hydrogen production generates no greenhouse gas emissions.

It has been a great opportunity to take part in one of the first projects of this kind in Spain, opening doors for our company in this sector.
